Motherly Love...

***Samantha and my mom this afternoon. What a sleepy girl!***

Samantha will be 7 weeks old tomorrow...I cannot believe it. Time has just flown by. I am really glad that I opted to take the full 12 weeks off work to be home with Samantha. She is a dream baby. She loves to sleep, just like her mom and Gram (pictured above). I have told Jeff on many occasions that I would be ready to have another baby now! I think it is just because she has been so wonderful and I love her so much. When she gets up in the middle of the night I look forward to seeing her face...and this is insane considering how much I LOVED my sleep pre-Samantha.

Samantha's first trip out of state...good old West-by-God.

***Samantha and I at Ricky D's in Parkersburg, WV. (Overlooking the Ohio River.)***
***Mom, Samantha and I at Pappa Boo's at Buckeye Lake.***

Today was Samantha first time out of Ohio! My Mom, Dee, Samantha and I went out to see Kathy at her house in Thornville, OH (near Buckeye Lake). Kathy has 8 acres in the most beautiful setting. They have a really long driveway and a huge pond! I would love to live some place like that...if only it wasn't so far from our jobs! Anyways...we ate at a place right on the lake called Pappa Boo's...they had really reasonably priced seafood! Then we drove on to WV. I basically wanted to go just to go to Gabe's. For those of you that do not have a Gabe's it is the best store ever! It is a clothing store that sells Brand Name clothes at a REALLY discounted price. I was able to get Jeff a pair of Nike Shox for only $50 and I got Samantha 2 Juicy zip-ups for $30 for both!!! After I put some major damage to our bank account we went to dinner at Ricky D's in Parkersburg. It is an Italian Restaurant right on the Ohio River. Since the weather was so great we were able to sit outside...beautiful. Then mom and I handed Dee off to her husband Steve and headed home. Samantha slept the whole way home. Mom dropped Samantha and I off at 10 PM...it was a very long day but we had a great day trip!

Big feet.

Today Samantha and I went to my moms to hang out at the pool with her and Dee. Mandy and Grady came over to get a little sun as well. When we left I crashed my car right into Mandy's Cadillac! What a bone head move! Since I was going so slow it was more of a side swipe than a crash but it did damage to both of our cars (mostly theirs). Nick was able to a get a rental car while their car is getting fixed...but I feel awful about the whole thing...sorry Nick and Mandy! Anyways, the above picture is of Samantha in her first pair of beach shoes...they are a little too big but will be perfect for the beach!

She found her thumb!

Daddy Time...

I give Lauren all the credit for keeping up the blog and making it nice and pretty lately while I have been slacking. I love how excited she is to update everyone on our family life.

Weekends are my time to take care of Sam in the middle of the night and give Lauren the chance to catch up on her sleep. I was praying last night that Samantha would sleep well as I have a terrible cold and really needed some rest. Samantha fell asleep just before 10:30pm. I woke up at 3:30am thinking Sam should need to eat soon but she was asleep. I went ahead and got a bottle ready for her. She slept through her diaper change and woke up just in time to eat. I fed her the bottle, burped her a couple times and within minutes she was back to sleep. She continued to sleep like a champ until 7:30am. She ate again and went back to sleep until around 9am. I brought her downstairs and she watched the British Open with me for a couple of hours until Lauren woke up. I was very happy Lauren was able to get as much sleep as she was...she deserved it.

Samantha is so beautiful and I am so glad she is my daughter. I love her so much.

I love both my girls more than anything...

Shopping Trip...

***Samantha in the cart at Bed Bath & Beyond.***

Today Mom, Aunt Dee, Kathy (Dee's Sister), Samantha and I went on a shopping trip. We met for lunch at Cracker Barrel. Then we went to Bed Bath & Beyond. I sat in the car and fed Samantha when we first got there so she was not in her car seat. Mom and I were just taking turns carrying her around the store when mom found a very fluffy pink pillow. So we made her a little bed in the cart and pushed her around. She actually loved it! Then we ran over to Babies R Us and then Sam's Club! Samantha loved her girls day out!

Girls night out...plus Cole!

***Lisa and Samantha***

*** Becky Mae and Samantha Mae***

Tonight Whitney, Cole, Samantha, Lisa, Becky and I all got together for dinner @ CPK. Lisa and Becky are leaving for Paraguay tommorrow on a mission trip. These pictures are not great quality since they were taken from my cell phone but I had to capture Samantha's first meeting with the girls!

Cute as a button!

Today Samantha and I went to First Watch for lunch with my mom and Aunt Vikki. I ate 2 huge chocolate chip pancakes and am realizing why my pregnancy weight has not fallen off yet! But I have to say, they were delicious pancakes;) My Aunt came over so I could help her with some stuff online and I finally got a picture of Samantha with her...above. Then I took a picture of Samantha in her shirt from the hospital. I thought they just gave you those shirts but apparently my mom had to buy it (cheap on the hospitals part considering it cost thousands of dollars to have a baby!) but she does look cute in it!

Hair-do!

My sister-in-law Mandy gave us a hairbrush this week. (Grady is still mostly bald at 15 months and was willing to part with it.) So after Samantha's bath tonight Jeff and I gave her a special hair-do!

One Month Old Today!!!

Samantha is laying on the blanket that Mawmaw Hauser made for her when she was born!

BLOWOUT!!!

***Samantha's diaper change after her blowout @ Marshall's.***

***Samantha in her new outfit out in the gazebo.***

Today Mandy, Grady, Mom, Samantha and I went to lunch at First Watch. Then we ran over to Marshall's to shop a little and while we were there Samantha had a MAJOR blowout. Mandy was holding Samantha as we were browsing the baby clothes and she went #2. But is was so major that she was dripping all over the floor and Mandy's clothes! Mandy and I hurried off to the bathroom, where there was no changing table, to clean up Samantha and my mom tried to find an outfit to buy and change her into. Mandy and I made a changing station on the sink counter. Mandy had to be really careful getting her onsie off to not get any poop in her hair! (She had poop all the way up to her shoulder blades.) We managed to get her all cleaned up and in her new outfit. When I went to check out I think the cashier thought I was crazy since Samantha was already wearing the outfit! Then we all went out to mom's to spend some time by the pool. Samantha sat in the bouncy seat out in the gazebo. We decided that Samantha blew out just to get a new outfit...such a girly thing to do!

Update on Samantha's Kidney

***This is from the other night...Samantha loves sleeping with her arms up by her head...just like her daddy!***

This morning Jeff and I took Samantha to see her Pediatric Urologist to follow up on the tests that were done on the 2nd. Our appointment was @ 8:00 AM but the Doctor did not see us until 8:50 AM. Samantha has a Duplicated Collecting System, which basically means she has two kidneys on the right side...a total of 3 kidneys. Two of the kidneys are working well and one is showing some swelling. We have to take her back for another Renal Ultrasound on August 10th. The good thing is that this ultrasound is not invasive so she will not have to have an IV or catheter put it for this test. They called these ultrasounds, jelly on the belly ultrasounds since they just have to put jelly on her belly to be able to view the kidney. Right now she will not have to have surgery but they have put her on antibiotics for the next year. Then she will have to have another VCUG when she is 1 year old to see if there are any changes. The thought right now is that she will grow out of the reflux and will not have to always be on the amoxicillian. We are pretty hopeful that she will not have to have surgery too. So we are just praying she will grow into a healthy little girl.

PS. Samantha weighs 9.6 lbs today...what a growing girl!!!

Happy 4th of July!!!

***Grady and Samantha with their 4th cousins Mason (left) and Gavin (right).***

***Samantha in her "Baby's First Fourth" outfit!***
Today my mom had people over for the 4th of July. Nick, Mandy, Grady, Scott Winfield, Jeff, Samantha and I went over there for lunch today and to hang out by the pool. Since it has been cold at night lately the pool was too cold for the adults to get in but Grady did not seem to mind. Then around 3 o'clock Jeff and I went home to take a short nap. This is the first time we have left Samantha with anyone. (We were just so exhausted b/c Samantha was not in the sleeping mood last night.) So my mom and Aunt Vikki took turns holding her while we were gone. Then we came back around 5 o'clock for dinner and my whole family from Springfield/Dayton came over. This was the first time that Samantha got to meet her 4th cousins (pictured above) and my 3rd cousins Robin, Brian, Chris and Katie. This was also the first time my cousin Tara held Samantha...she does not usually hold babies! So all in all we had a great day just hanging out with my family. I am hoping that next year Samantha will be able to swim... but right now I would just be happy if her umbilical cord would fall off and we could give her a real bath!

Nationwide Children's Hospital

Today was a very hard day for all of us. We had to take Samantha to Nationwide Children's Hospital to have a few test run. We got there about 1:30 for our 2:00 appointment and it is just a depressing place. There are sick kids everywhere. And while I know that it is a great place of healing it is still a sad place.
We had to wait for about 30 minutes until they called us back for the first test in Nuclear Medicine Renal Imaging. The test is called a Cystogram. (A radionuclide cystogram is a special imaging tests called a nuclear scan that involves placing radioactive material into the bladder. A scanner then detects radioactivity to check bladder and urinary tract functions.) To complete this test they had to put a catheter in which did not bother Samantha too much since they did numb her down there. But she took this time to poop...not once, not twice, but three times! Then she would push the catheter out and they would have to put it back in. Once the catheter was in they had to get an IV in. Since Samantha had to be all swaddled they wanted to put the IV in her foot, but after two tries in her left foot and one in the right foot they finally got it in her left hand. She really REALLY hated the tight rubber-band they would put around her before trying to get the IV in. Luckily they had Soothe-Ease, a sugary liquid that Samantha LOVES. She also had this same sugary stuff when she was in the NICU. So every time they would get ready to stick her or put the rubber-band on her we would dip her pacifier in the Soothe-Ease and it would help calm her down. Once they had her all situated and the machine could start taking pictures Samantha fell asleep. The way the test works is that for the first 20 minutes they just put a saline solution in her IV while taking pictures. Then they put the Radiation Medicine in her IV and take pictures for another 20 minutes. (They took the IV out after they put the Radiation Medicine in...which was nice for Samantha...she loves to have her hands free!) After that 20 minutes was up there was still a significant dilation of her right kidney so Jeff had to hold her upright to see if gravity would make a difference on the drainage of her right kidney...then the camera took more pictures for another 3 minutes. All of those images will be sent to the Pediatric Urology Department and we will get the results on July 7th. ***The pictures above are from this test. The little cup that looks like a little apple juice you would get in a cafeteria is the Soothe-Ease.***
Next we had to go to Fluorolgy Department for a VCUG = Voiding Cystourethrogram. (A children's (pediatric) voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) is an x-ray examination of a child's bladder and lower urinary tract that uses a special form of x-ray called fluoroscopy and a contrast material.) The plan was to roll up the catheter into Samantha's diaper from the last test and go to "Fluoro" but she had pushed it out before we got there. So the nurse had to re-cather her. Since there was only one nurse and Samantha was moving all around they asked me to help hold down her legs...this was really hard for me to do since Samantha was so upset and crying. But we got the cather back in and the Doctor came in to administer the test. They basically put a solution/dye into her cather which goes into her bladder, take lots of pictures, roll her around a bit and take more pictures (x-rays). From what I understand this is to see if there is reflux from the bladder back into the kidneys. The Doctor will again send these results to the Urology Department but she did say that there is some reflux and it seems like there is a "Duplicating Collecting System."
Again, we will not really know all the details of what is actually wrong with her until the 7th, but I think that she might have the same problem I had when I was little. My dad said that I had a Duplicating Collecting System too. I am just praying that she will not have to have surgery or have to be on anti-biotics for the rest of her life. We are really hopeful that she will grow out of this problem like I did.

3 Weeks Old...Tomorrow.

*(Here is a picture of Samantha's first night her her crib! ~Lauren)*

3 weeks have passed since Samantha was born and I think we’re really settling into a routine with her. It is funny how you can lose all track of time and your day is defined in 3 hour blocks between feedings, naps and diaper changes. Lauren has been feeling better and better and we’re starting to workout together. We have started to go to the middle school near us and workout on the track. I run and Lauren will do a combo of walking and running. I am surprised she feels good enough to run so soon but she has done great. We put Samantha in her stroller and she goes around the track with us. I love this!!! Even before Samantha was born, I have always enjoyed working out with Lauren and having that be one more thing we can do together.

Sam hasn’t been the best sleeper lately but last night was awesome. Due to a bad night on Monday, Lauren and I decided it was time to move her out of our room and get her in her crib. Last night she was awake most of the early evening so we had high hopes of her being tired come bedtime. We bathed her around 8pm and she hated it a lot less than the first few times we’ve done this. Normally, she screams during the entire process but last night she made it almost through the entire thing before crying. In retrospect, this was my fault. Last night was the first time I did most of the washing and I was just moving too slow and she got cold so I am thinking that was the problem. As soon as bath time was over, she was in a great mood.

She (Samantha that is) passed out on my lap around 9pm and Lauren and I watched a little TV (The Deadliest Catch; one of our favorite shows!) and then around 9:30 decided to head up to bed. As soon as I stood up and started walking upstairs Sam woke up. Not wide awake, but opening eyes here and there. We put her in her crib, tested the monitor to make sure we could hear her in our room and got in bed. (We found ourselves whispering in our room trying desperately to not wake her up). We laid in bed a while talking and I felt bad for Lauren as I know it was tough for her to not have Samantha in our room. It was hard for me too but I am trying to believe that this is good for her and she has to learn to sleep when we’re not there to console her.

Samantha made some noises but no crying and after Lauren and I talked some more we fell asleep around 10:15 or so. Sam was real champ! Lauren had to wake her up a little after midnight to eat. She slept again pretty sound until around 3am and needed to eat again. Lauren fed her and put her back down. I think I remember (was kind of out of it) Samantha waking up around 4am and Lauren going to her room to hold her for a bit. I think she fell back asleep relatively quickly as I was still awake when Lauren came back to bed. She slept again until 6:15am. I got up, changed her and brought her to Lauren to feed her. I put Sam back in her crib around 6:40 and she fell back asleep and was still sleeping when I left for work this morning around 7am. Last night was definitely one of her best sleeping nights. Hopefully we can expect more of the same moving forward.
